Fundamentals, this is a word that can be used to describe a way of getting down to the brass tacks of something. The fundamentals are the essentials, the binding of an object or idea. Without fundamentals, you will have no foundation to stand upon.
These days, calling someone a fundamentalist is not always a compliment. I am a fundamental Baptist, by conviction. What does this mean? I have chosen to be a part of the fundamental Baptists because I adhere and hold to the doctrine that defines this group. We hold fast to the fundamentals of the faith. What are the fundamentals of the faith, you might ask? The fundamentals of the faith can be compared to a car, in some ways. A car will still get you to a destination without the radio, without the air conditioner, without leather seats, and even without windshield wipers. Although the trip may be better with these items, you will still reach your destinaiton. The fundamentals of the car, those are the motor, transmission, and the wheels.
The fundamentals of the faith are such doctrines as the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ, the second coming, etc... Without these fundamental doctrines to build on, there is not much we can do. Will we place our trust in the traditions of man, or in the infallible Word of God? If someone removes the fundamentals, there is nothing left to build on other than opinion and heresy. This is why it is so vital to stand up, and contend earnestly for these doctrines. Sometime soon I will begin to go over each fundamental, and offer insight on the importance of each one. Stay tuned...
